ASTM A588 Grade A, B, K Steel Plate

ASTM A588 Grade A, B is the specification for atmospheric corrosion structural steel of High-Strength Low-Alloy, yield strength minimum 50 ksi 345 Mpa. It covers Grade A, Grade B, and Grade K, material includes steel shapes, plates, and bars for welded, riveted, or bolted construction but is intended primarily for use in welded bridges and buildings where savings in weight or added durability are important.

Structual products furnished under this specification shall conform to the requirements of the current edition of specification A6/A6M, for the specific structual product ordered, unless a conflict exists, in which case this specification shall prevail.

Coils are excluded from qualification to this specification until they are processed into a finished structual product. It means the products has been cut to individual lengths from a coil. The

ASTM A588 VS ASTM A242

A242 plate is low alloy structural steel with weight savings and atmospheric corrosion resistance.

From chemical composition ASTM A242 has lower carbon, phosphorus, and Sulfur contet, it has only one type, and A588 have three types, A588 GRADE A, B, K.

The ASTM A588 grade A plate is equivalent to Corten A steel plate. ASTM A242 plate is equivalent to Corten B. Compared with common low alloy high strength steel such as A572 Grade 50, ASTM A588 and ASTM A242 has advantages of weathering resistant performances.

In a word ASTM A588 covers more ranges of weathering steel than A242.
